Something quiet happened to how your customers find you. It didn't make headlines. There was no single update to panic about. But over the past year, a meaningful share of search traffic shifted away from the familiar ten blue links and toward AI-generated answers — from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and a growing list of others.

If your website wasn't built with this in mind, it may be invisible to the tools now shaping buying decisions. This article explains what that means in practice, and what you can actually do about it.

How search is changing

Traditional SEO was built around one idea: rank high in a list, get clicked. Users see ten options, pick one, and land on your site. Traffic was the metric.

AI search engines work differently. When someone asks ChatGPT “who builds custom websites in [city]?” or asks Perplexity “what should I look for in a web developer?”, the AI doesn't return a list of links. It synthesises an answer from sources it trusts, and either cites you briefly or doesn't mention you at all.

Gartner projected that by 2026, roughly 25% of organic search traffic would migrate toward AI chatbots and voice assistants. Anecdotally, that number feels about right in mid-2026. The share varies heavily by industry and query type, but it's no longer a trend to monitor — it's the current reality.

With traditional SEO, you compete for position. With AI search, you compete to be mentioned at all.

What AEO actually means

Answer Engine Optimization — AEO — is the practice of structuring your website and its content so that AI tools can understand, trust, and cite it when they synthesise answers.

It's not a replacement for traditional SEO. Speed, authority, mobile performance, and keyword relevance still matter — AI search engines use many of the same quality signals that Google has relied on for years. AEO is better understood as an extension: you still need a technically sound site, but you also need your content structured in a way that's easy for an AI to extract, paraphrase, and attribute.

The short version is this: if your content clearly answers real questions, is well-organised, loads quickly, and sits on a technically clean site, you're most of the way there. If it doesn't, optimising for AEO is a lot of extra work bolted onto a foundation that was already underperforming.

How AI engines read your site

Understanding what AI crawlers look for makes the optimisation work obvious:

  • Semantic HTML. AI systems read the structure of your page, not just the words. A heading tagged as <h2> signals a topic. A paragraph tagged as <p> signals supporting content. A site built on a page builder that wraps everything in generic <div> tags loses that signal almost entirely.
  • Structured data (schema.org). JSON-LD markup tells AI systems exactly what your business does, where it operates, what a page is about, and who authored it. Sites with well-implemented schema are far more likely to be cited correctly.
  • Clear question-and-answer patterns. Pages that directly answer questions — especially in the first paragraph — are easier to extract from. FAQ sections with real answers (not “contact us to learn more”) are gold.
  • Speed and Core Web Vitals. Crawlers prioritise sites that load quickly. A slow site is deprioritised regardless of how good the content is. Sub-second load times matter more in this context, not less.
  • E-E-A-T signals. Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. These are the signals Google uses to assess content quality, and AI tools have adopted similar frameworks. Clear authorship, consistent branding, working links, and no technical errors all contribute.
  • llms.txt. An emerging convention — a plain-text file at /llms.txt that gives AI crawlers a summary of what your site covers. Think of it as a polite introduction for machines. Not all crawlers read it yet, but adoption is growing fast.

What you can control right now

Some of this is content strategy — writing clearly, answering real questions, keeping information current. That part is in your hands regardless of how your site is built. But a meaningful portion is technical, and whether your site can actually deliver it depends on how it was built.

Worth knowingYou can check whether AI tools cite your business by simply asking them. Type “who are the best custom web developers in [your city]?” into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. If you're not appearing, you have a gap to close.
  1. Audit your structured data. Use Google's Rich Results Test to check what schema is present on your key pages. Add at minimum: LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage where relevant.
  2. Write directly. Lead every page and blog post with a clear statement of what the page is about and who it's for. Don't bury the answer three paragraphs in.
  3. Add real FAQs. Think about the five questions you get asked most often. Write them out properly — full question, complete answer — and mark them up with FAQ schema.
  4. Fix your page speed. If your mobile PageSpeed score is below 60, fix it before doing anything else. A slow site won't benefit from any of the other changes.
  5. Add an llms.txt file. Write a plain-text summary of your business, the services you offer, and the locations you serve. Put it at the root of your domain. It takes 20 minutes and signals that you understand the new landscape.

Why custom-built sites win here

This is where the honest technical conversation has to happen. Many of the signals AI search engines care about most — semantic HTML, clean structured data, fast load times, precise schema markup — are difficult or impossible to control on a template or page builder site.

When a developer writes your site from scratch using a framework like React and Next.js, every heading tag is intentional, every structured data block is accurate, and there's no layer of builder-generated markup getting between your content and the crawler. The semantic structure of the page is an architecture decision, not an afterthought.

Template and page-builder sites typically:

  • Use generic div tags instead of semantic HTML elements
  • Inject schema markup automatically and incorrectly (or not at all)
  • Ship excessive CSS and JavaScript that slows down crawl and rendering
  • Make it difficult or impossible to add a custom llms.txt or precisely control meta structure

None of this is fatal. A well-maintained WordPress site with a careful developer can check most of these boxes. But a hand-coded site starts ahead and stays ahead — there's simply less fighting the tooling to do what AI visibility requires.

A quick self-audit

Five checks you can run today without any technical knowledge:

  1. Ask an AI about your business. Search ChatGPT or Perplexity for the service you offer in your location. Are you mentioned?
  2. Check PageSpeed. Run your homepage through pagespeed.web.dev. Below 70 on mobile is a problem.
  3. Search your schema. Visit validator.schema.org and paste your URL. Does your business type appear?
  4. Check for llms.txt. Type your domain followed by /llms.txt in a browser. Does anything appear?
  5. View your page source. Right-click any page and choose “View Page Source.” Are your headings in proper <h1>, <h2>, <h3> tags, or are they buried in divs?

If any of those reveal a gap, you now know what to fix. If several of them reveal gaps, the most efficient path is often a rebuild — because each fix will be fighting the same underlying structural problem.
